Bushwhacking Fir Mountain, A Catskill 3500 Trailless Peak

Bushwhacking Fir Mountain, A Catskill 3500 Trailless Peak

Fir Mountain (3,629') is one of the trailless Catskill 3500 peaks. The traditional bushwhack brings you to the summit from a herd path near the Biscuit Brook Lean-to, but for this hike, we took a longer approach and then utilized the traditional bushwhack to return.

For this hike, we climbed towards the summit on a shoulder of Fir Mountain and then from the summit, followed the traditional herd path down to the Pine Hill West Branch Trail and back out to the truck at the Biscuit Brook Trailhead.

There was no herd path (social trail) on the 1st half of our hike, but once at the summit, there was a very defined and easy to follow herd path that brought us back down to the Pine Hill West Branch Trail.

Where was Moe? He was down in Damascus, Virginia celebrating with thousands of other Appalachian Trail hikers at the annual Appalachian Trail Days celebration.

All told, the hike was about 8 miles in length and offered about 1,617 feet in elevation gain.

We offer Hiking, Backpacking and Camping Services in the Catskills through our guiding company, Hike On Guides, and can guide you on this hike!

By sharing our experiences through outdoor activities and our knowledge of natural and cultural history, we seek to share our sense of place with our visitors, with the hope that they bring home an appreciation for stewardship of our natural areas that can take hold in their own communities.
